London West End theatre stopover 2025

While heading to our Venice Lagoon cruise to celebrate our 28th anniversary, we took a few days in London on either end of the trip because... London!

The hotel greeted us with an anniversary treat!

As usual, we saw as many shows as possible. "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," our only musical this go-around, was an unexpected delight.

Two aspects of director Nicholas Hytner's "Richard II" drew us to an afternoon of Shakespeare: 1) it's a Shakespeare "history" play we haven't seen within the time period Christina is perennially studying; 2) Jonathan Bailey was headlining.

The theatre allowed us to take curtain call pics. It's hard to tell, but that is Jonathan Bailey. He was wonderful but honestly, the entire production was stellar and we would have enjoyed it no matter who played Richard the tyrant.

At the National Theatre, we saw "Dear England" and thought this stage was striking. Strong show, too, about the struggle of England's national football team to match the elite results in international play that British society expected their elite-level athletes should be able to produce.

The newest offering from Mischief Theatre, "The Comedy About Spies," was a must-see for us.

Our beloved Half-Price Tickets booth in Leicester Square won't look the same the next time we visit. We have so many fond memories here, we had to capture the current iteration one last time.

Our final night of theatre we saw "Giant" about Roald Dahl starring John Lithgow. Another West End winner!

This is a picture for our personal history book. Since the Queen's death in 2022, we hadn't had occasion to stroll by Her Majesty's Theatre, which is now His Majesty's Theatre.
